Radiation Therapist


Position Overview

The Radiation Therapist will be responsible for accurately recording, interpreting and administering the treatment prescribed by radiation oncologists to include HDR treatments. During treatment, therapists use, X-ray films or CT scans to localize and outline anatomical areas requiring treatment. Simulation of new patients including tattooing and following proper protocols. Provide supportive care to include dietary, skin care, etc. Teamwork and good interpersonal skills are needed for this position.


1. Completion of a formal Radiation Therapy program.

2. Board certified with the ARRT.

3. Computer knowledge useful.

4. Good problem solving skills.

5. Current CPR/BLS Certification.

Essential Job Functions

· Positions patients for treatment with accuracy according to prescription.

· Enter data into computer and set controls to operate and adjust equipment and monitor dosage.

· Follow principles of radiation protection for patient, self and others.

· Maintain records, as required, including such information as radiation dosages, equipment settings and patients reactions.

· Review prescription, diagnosis, patient chart and identification.

· Conduct most treatment sessions independently, in accordance with the long-term treatment plan and under the general direction of the patient’s physician.

· Check radiation therapy equipment to ensure proper operation, to include daily warm up procedure.

· Assess patient status, (general health, side effects, dietary needs etc.). Report anything unusual to physician.

· Educate, prepare and reassure patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance, and reinforcing physician’s advice regarding treatment reactions and post treatment care. Make printed information available.

· Prepare and construct equipment, such as immobilization, treatment and protection devices.

· Take ID photos and photos of treatment set up.

· Ensure that proper informed consent is signed

· Ensure IGRT/CT films are approved by physician each day.

· Perform machine safety checks; know safe limits of equipment operations, and report abnormalities or inconsistencies to the proper authority.

· Adhere to radiation safety procedure protocol.

· Demonstrate effective verbal communication skills in the clinical setting.

· Maintain a high degree of accuracy and an awareness of safety issues.

· Display professional conduct essential to the well-being of the radiation oncology patient.


Minimum Requirements

1. Completion of a formal Radiation Therapy program.

2. Board certified with the ARRT.

3. Computer knowledge useful.

4. Good problem solving skills.

5. Current CPR/BLS Certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Computer literate.

  • Knowledge of Windows and MS applications (Word, Excel).

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to work in a relatively unsupervised environment with a high degree of accuracy.
